russia has a very critical port along the syrian course along the mediterranean the port of tartuse. russia is trying very hard to keep tear influence inside syria and may be trying to play both sides of the coin here. they want to keep assad so they have influence with him and to hedge their bet to gain as much influence with the syrian rebels so if the rebels win they get to keep the port which is their only naval port outside the russian federation. going forward this turned into a little bit of a proxy war. a number about weapons the rebels are getting especially coming from outside powers. obviously president assad has been resupplied by iran and russia. rebels being supplied by saudi arabia, qatar and also turkey so that both side here have little interest in a peace deal. more interestingly both sides, the saudis and the iranians, have an interest in trying to see this go on as long as possible and an interest seeing their side win inside syria. they're willing, more than happy in fact, to supply money and weapons as long as the syrians are willing to continue to keep killing
